RN CEUs Mandatory
To renew your license, many states require RNs to complete continuing education units (CEUs). Some states require specific subjects to qualify for CEUs, including identifying and reporting child abuse and infection control. Others require nurses to take one hour of education in pain management. To determine whether continuing education is mandatory in your state, check with your state board of nursing.
Some states require CPR and advanced life-saving courses for all healthcare workers. If a CE provider does not provide these courses, they may request approval from the Board of Nursing. These requests must be made through the DELPROS online portal. Taking approved CE courses not only enhances your earnings, but also keeps you up to date in the nursing field. This ensures you’re providing the best care to your patients. If you’re a busy nurse, it can be difficult to find time to complete your RN CEUs requirements. However, you can typically find a period of time in which you can complete your CE requirements.
Every two years, RNs must complete at least 50 contact hours of continuing education. This is a requirement to remain licensed. These hours can be in various topics or can be part of a continuing education program. Some examples of mandatory CEUs include 2 hours of training in HIV/AIDS, a half-hour on domestic violence CE, or three hours on pain management.
APRNs must complete twenty contact hours every two years, including six hours of pharmacology. In addition to these hours, APRNs must complete a mandatory child abuse course, a two-hour course on substance abuse, and one hour on Alzheimer’s disease. Some states require that APRNs earn at least 60 contact hours each two years.
Are RN CEUs Mandatory?
During the renewal process, nurses must submit fingerprints and indicate any convictions or disciplinary actions they have received during their professional career. The Board also requires RNs to keep the Board of Nursing informed about any changes to their mailing address. Failure to complete these requirements may cause your renewal to be delayed or even incomplete.
Nurses may also be required to complete advanced education credits, including continuing education in advanced practice areas. If you have a question about whether or not CEUs are required for nursing practice in New York, you should check with your state’s governing board.
Nurses who want to practice in New Jersey must meet the requirements of the state board. In addition, if you are a non-English-speaking nurse, you may be required to pass the English Language Proficiency Test. The NYSED will not issue you a limited permit if you are not able to pass the exam.
RNs who graduated after 1990 in New York must complete a course in child abuse reporting. These courses must be approved by the NYSED. Those who did not graduate from a nursing program after 1990 may request an exemption from this requirement. LPNs, on the other hand, do not have this requirement.
