How do you feel about winter?

As the days get shorter, the afternoons get longer and colder, it is tempting to hibernate. How many of us are secretly relieved when a night out is postponed or canceled! We go home, draw the curtains, and spend a quiet night snuggled up watching the sets on TV. Happiness!

Some people are especially depressed during the fall and winter months. Sleeping more, having a hard time getting up every day makes you depressed and generally cranky. Once the days become lighter, they feel better again. Known as SAD or seasonal affective disorder, it can be helped by a light box, which simulates exposure to sunlight.

Here are some tips to help you feel better about winter.

– Get enough natural light it is important during the winter months. Our bodies use sunlight to program several important functions, so reducing daylight hours can disrupt our body clock. Try to get outside regularly, perhaps going for a walk during lunch, and use the weekends to catch up on fresh air and exercise.

– A cozy home it is especially important during the winter months. Add pops of color with prints and furnishings, warm fabrics like velvet and wool, and introduce subtle lighting through sidelights, lamps, and candles. Good lighting can improve your mood and create a haven to return to.

– Our diet tends to change from salads and grills to soups, stews and casseroles. Delicious comfort food to warm us up! Why not combine exercise and healthy eating with a walk while your food cooks slowly?

– Continue socializing and enjoy your home by inviting people to spend fun nights, such as cards or board games combined with a small dinner. You meet others, maybe you take turns in the accommodation, while maintaining your relationships. Or have an evening where everyone contributes their “best” dish. Provide a good reason to dress up a bit and minimize the caveman mentality.

– Maybe find inspiration away from home learning a skill like painting or another language, volunteering in a shelter or in an amateur theater group. Join a sports team that is trusted to show up for everyone to get a game!

– Treat yourself well controlling stress levels, especially if you are vulnerable and feeling depressed. Talk things over with family, friends, or a therapist.

And remember that every year animals and trees hibernate, but before long a new life arises and the next year begins. Each season has its role.
