What we do while awake is just as important as what happens when we close our eyes to rest at night. While sleeping may seem like a simple task, the truth is that many people suffer from insomnia and other sleep disorders. It can be a state of rehabilitation that can easily disrupt a person’s general health and well-being and lead to more problems down the road. Many things can happen if a person does not get enough sleep every night.

Signs that you need more sleep.

To ensure you get a better night’s sleep, you might consider doing the following:

1. Eliminate all distractions.

If you have electronics in your bedroom, get rid of them.

Your TV is both a visual and aural stimulant that can still engage your senses while you’re trying to get some sleep.

Your radio is stimulating audio and noise has never been a companion to sleep.

Your laptop should always be used away from your bed. Surfing the Internet right before bed is a bad idea. Stop opening page after page of interesting stories and go to bed early. It’s a rabbit hole, don’t even try to click on that first link.

The biggest culprit is your phone. It’s like a silent siren leading you to your final downfall. Remember that time you spent the night talking on the phone only to regret it the next morning? Not only does it ring, but just having it around will cheer you up. Put it in another room and use a bedside alarm to wake you up in the morning.

So items like the radio and TV can keep you from getting an early and sound sleep, and removing them will be a good start.

2. Buy yourself a comfortable bed.

A lumpy mattress will do a lot of damage to your body. There is nothing worse than waking up with a sore body. As long as your body is not comfortable, you will not sleep well. Invest in yourself and buy a comfortable mattress that your body will thank you for.

3. Go to bed early.

Adjust your bedtime and slowly but surely trick your body into sleeping early. Adding a few more hours to your sleep time will do wonders for you. You may go round and round for a few hours for the first few days, but persistence will eventually pay off over time. In a few days, your body will realize that there is no point in putting up a fight and letting you sleep.

Treat your body as it deserves and allow yourself to rest throughout the night.
