A Review of the Revival RG-27 Acoustic Guitar

In the search for a solid wood dreadnought-size guitar, the Revival RG-27 is worth seriously considering, given the quick response the mahogany provides along with a solid Engleman spruce top; This guitar is a proven combination that guitarists can trust to deliver their sound.

The Revival RG-27 is the big dog, this dreadnought-sized guitar is built to go into battle; (hence the name battleship). This guitar is versatile enough for fingerpicking, but really excels at flatpicking and is primarily designed with that style in mind.

This model was one of the first guitars I received from Revival Acoustics, my first impression was good, the quality of the woods used, the fit and finish and overall appearance were very good and this guitar was not overly built but light . simple weight by design but complemented by a nice abalone inlay around the soundhole; Which really makes it stand out from the crowd!

I prefer a D-18 style guitar, because with this combination of woods and the dreadnought sized body you get the perfect sound for my ears. Engelman spruce produces a slightly brighter tone, which I think is well suited for finger players, it’s stiffer than Sitka spruce but breaks faster than Adirondack (red spruce); therefore, it provides the power needed for flat picking without having to wait for the guitar or top to mature (which with red spruce can take five years or more, depending on the amount of playing time invested)! So this guitar plays fast and is satisfying right out of the box and doesn’t require a heavy-handed approach; as it responds well to whatever style the player chooses. I think it’s important to point out here, that because it’s a solid wood instrument, the overall sound or tone of the guitar will continue to develop as it’s played and age over time and after a decade or so the guitar will have settled into your own and it really sounds great!

It’s important to consider the size of guitar you want/need because many people own a dreadnought sized guitar without realizing it may be too much for them and swinging your neck around a large D size body and sides can be a real problem. . task unless you are gifted with long arms or a large frame!

Please consider your own body size/frame first before choosing this large body instrument! I’m a medium height guy, but I have long arms and I like to cut so much that I need a dreadnought. However, I really like an OM size guitar maybe because it’s more the size of my body, feels more comfortable and makes a different sound, but I need the big D size guitar for bluegrass with flat picking and hard rhythm patterns etc. .

Suffice it to say here that if you’ve been looking for an affordable all-solid mahogany dreadnought-style guitar with these features, then the RG-27 is definitely worth considering.
