The best dynamic SUVs money can buy

Originally destined to cross deserts, mountains and thick forests, SUVs have become much more versatile and dynamic over the years. Now these 4x4s can traverse paved roads and rough terrain with equal ease and dexterity. Nearly all of the major players now include vehicles with off-road capability, without compromising city driving, comfort, and performance. Since the competition is stiff and the options are numerous, selecting a suitable SUV tends to be problematic. To save you from this problem, we’ve put together a who’s who list of some of the best off-road vehicles available on the market today. They all stand out from the clutter and offer superior maneuverability on highly dynamic terrain.

Jeep Wrangler:

Most people must be wondering why this iconic Jeep is at number 5, well there is a very good reason for that. As its name suggests, it can handle very rough terrain without breaking a sweat, but sadly that’s the extent of its experience. Although it has the steepest approach and departure angles with an incredible 10″ of ground clearance, when it comes to urban roads and ride comfort, its performance is only mediocre. The noisy cabin, thirsty engine and plastic interior don’t make make it fun to drive regularly. Our verdict: stay away from it if you’re looking for everyday use, but if you’re looking for an affordable, rugged off-road vehicle for summer camping, then go with it.

Toyota FJ Cruiser:

If you’ve overlooked FJ, reconsider. It’s as good off-roader as it gets, with the ultimate eye-catching appearance. Its urban handling is not bad at all and the only problem in its general performance is its rear seats and poor visibility, so parking and driving on the streets will be difficult.

Nissan X-trail:

Although Nissan is not very attractive, it performs exceptionally well in very diverse landscapes. There’s plenty of room, so it won’t let you down during outdoor camping and its comfortable ride, coupled with the balanced interior, makes it even better for regular driving. If it’s so good, why is it in third place? From the looks of it, there’s nothing exceptional about its exterior, unlike the FJ and our top two picks.

Jeep Grand Cherokee:

The 2012 Grand Cherokee offers the perfect balance of on- and off-road performance and economy. The interior looks classy and high-quality, the exterior makes it one of the attractive and distinctive SUVs, and its performance in urban and extra-urban terrain is remarkable. The only reason it’s not in first place is because of the Range Rover Evoque.

Range Rover Evoque:

There’s an unwritten rule in the ranking books that first place must go to Range Rover, well this time Land Rover’s compact SUV takes that spot. Its powerful engine and futuristic appearance make it an instant viewing pleasure. It’s beautiful to look at from inside and out and handles like a true Range Rover on and off the road. Not only does it threaten the supremacy of reliable Japanese SUVs, it also challenges the luxury SUVs of German automakers.

Honorable Mentions: Toyota Land Cruiser and Range Rover:

Land Cruiser and Range Rover were not included in the list as we wanted to make room for new entrants. Land Cruiser has reinvented itself over the years and, like the British Range Rover, offers exceptional comfort and luxury with an uncompromising off-road driving experience. Although Cruiser extends some advantage in reliability, Rover outperforms it in luxury, neutralizing Toyota’s advantage.
