Different breeds of black cats

Superstition aside, you’ve decided you want a black cat. Here is information and a list of the various breeds of black cats for you to choose from. Decide what personality traits and attributes you want in your cat.

Bombay cat

The Bombay cat is the only breed of cat that is completely black. There are no other recognized deviations; the coat must be black to the roots for the cat to be a true Bombay. Although these cats are distant and independent by nature, they are friendly with all members of the family and like to play. They crave affection and attention, but only on your terms.

They have a rounded face with pointed ears, and are very muscular and heavy on the body. Their eyes are generally orange in color, but the British breed has golden or green eyes.

This breed was created by Nikki Horner in the 1950s. He wanted to create a small panther-like cat, and after a few tries, he created what is now recognized as the Bombay cat with its rich eye color. They were named after Bombay, India, which is considered the land of the black leopard.

Persian cat

The Persians have a regal air about them. Its nature is much more placid than that of other cat breeds. Inbreeding and attempts to meet the requirements of the competition make the Persian cat very docile. However, there are Persian cats that are more lively, especially the Chinchilla cat. They do not have the flat face that most Persians have. Grooming is a daily necessity with a Persian cat, as its coat will become knotty very quickly.

The Persian cat has a rounded head, flat face, and short ears. They generally have a larger jaw, and some Persians have an oversized jaw due to inbreeding. They often have eye discharge and may have difficulty breathing due to the shape of their face. Their coats are extremely hairy and their tails are bushy.

The Persians have been shown in competitions since 1871 when they appeared at the Crystal Palace in London. However, they were first seen further back with the first sightings in the mid-16th century in Europe. They originated in Persia (now Iran) and Turkey. Their fur was thought to have been lengthened as an adaptation to the cold mountainous areas of Persia.

American Shorthair and British Shorthair

With variations in the texture of their fur, these two breeds are together in this section because they are very similar in nature, having been bred from a large gene pool and being a very resistant stock. They are healthy, robust and playful without genetic defects like other breeds. This breed is the type you would see on the street; in other words, your general moggy.

The British Shorthair is originally from Great Britain. The American Shorthair is believed to have been introduced via the Mayflower ship.
