Civil War Uniforms: Top 10 Things To Do With Pants

You want to be comfortable in your pants, right? Follow these tips and not only will your print be accurate, you’ll have pants that fit and feel great!

1. The military pants of the day came directly out of civilian pants patterns. Ragged or civilian pants were very common as the pants wore out quickly.

2. A little patches on the pants would be nice, but I wouldn’t go with the dumpster look. I would patch if I needed it. I would make a proper hand sewn patch.

3. Use a color of fabric that matches the material of the pants as closely as possible. You don’t want to look like a walking quilt.

4. You have a little more freedom with the pants. I do not recommend making a pair of pants in a trendy pattern and wearing them low.

5. Use an old pattern and make them so that you can wear them above the waist like they were worn back then.

6. They were 2 to 4 inches higher than the rise of modern pants. They were worn above the waist.

7. I would also recommend making your pants out of a lighter material than your jacket if you can find a suitable fabric due to the warmth factor.

8. Pants are extremely important because you take your jacket off at events but always have your pants on. So, go with pants that fit well, are good for the heat, and look sharp.

9. Contrary to popular belief that the smaller the size, the slimmer you look. If you want to look gaunt and skinny, get pants that are a few inches too big; they make you look slimmer. Remember, the lean look will enhance your impression.

10. Cotton pants were common, so if you don’t want to wear wool, feel free to throw on a pair of cotton pants like the ones shown on pg. 119 of the TIANI CIVIL WAR REGIMENTS AND UNIFORMS worn by Pvt. James A. McKinstry of the 42nd Alabama. I have cotton pants, which have served me well for years in the heat.
