Historic Holiday Destinations in India

India has been home to different cultures and traditions since time immemorial and that can be seen in the countless heritage sites. Few countries can boast of having such a rich heritage and culture as India. As a result, there are many places in India that are of great interest to those interested in history, culture, and heritage.

India’s capital, New Delhi, is a great place to start a journey to rediscover India’s great historical treasures. The Red Fort was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and served as the imperial home of the Mughals. The Red Fort alone can take up a day, as there is so much to explore in it. Delhi has other historical destinations like India Gate, Humayun’s Tomb, Lotus Temple, Jantar Mantar, Qutub Minar and many more. There are many hotels in India that organize historical tours in and around New and Old Delhi.

Not far from Delhi is the Fatehpur Sikri located in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Fatehpur Sikri was the “first planned city” built by the Mughals and is a fine example of Mughal architecture. It was created in the 16th century and for a short time it served as the capital of the great Mughal Empire. This place is full of history.

To explore the best of Fatehpur Sikri, one should book a room in one of the hotels in India for at least 2-3 days. The Jama Masjid situated in Fatehpur Sikri is also a popular destination. If you are short on time, but want to see Fatehpur Sikri and the famous Taj Mahal, it would be a good idea to book a room at a nearby Agra hotel. Fatehpur Sikri is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city itself is deserted. Therefore, it is a better idea to live in one of the many hotels in Agra.

While the northern half of India is famous for Mughal architecture, the southern part of India also has its share of historical tourism. Hampi, the capital of the famous Vijaynagara Empire, one of the largest Hindu empires in medieval India, is now recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site. Hampi is located in the state of Karnataka, approximately 300 kilometers from the city of Bangalore. There are many hotels in Hampi as the place is popular with tourists. One can find many Hindu temples in Hampi as well as the ruins of the great Vijaynagara Empire.

Apart from Hinduism and Islam, Buddhism also had a great impact on the culture and tradition of medieval India. The famous Ajanta caves in Maharashtra testify to the influence of Buddhism in India. There are many other heritage sites in different parts of India such as Khajuraho temples in Maharashtra state, Golkonda ruined city in Andhra Pradesh state to name a few.

All in all, India is an absolute treat for those interested in history and culture.
