Nigeria an emerging tourist country

Nigeria, located in the West African region of Africa, is a beautiful country to behold. It limits to the north with the Republic of Niger, to the east with the Republic of Benin, to the west with Cameroon and to the south with the Atlantic Ocean. Umar Yar’adua’s administration, which began in May 2007, has made tourism one of his main concerns. Over the years, the tourism sector had been neglected. But with the current developments in the country, it is becoming the tourist paradise of Africa.

Recently, in the state of Cross Rivers, Calabar, a magnificent resort (Tinapa) was commissioned. This resort has first class facilities: swimming pool, shops, hotels, parks, etc. Cross Rivers already has many other resorts. Lagos State, southwestern Nigeria, is bracing for the pace. The governor has been beautifying the city for the last year and a half.

Lagos used to be a dirty and chaotic city, but now it looks good. Roads are being built, bridges are being built, illegal buildings are being demolished, etc. Tourist attractions in Lagos are plentiful: Shoprite Mall, Elekan Beach, Badagry Beach, Bar Beach, Tarkwa Bay, etc. The southeastern states are also preparing for the new challenges: states like Imo state with attractions like Oguta lake, Mbari cultural center, zoo, etc. The Imo State government has upgraded the infrastructure of the state and also the airport to cope with the influx of people.

The northern part of the country is improving its infrastructure. The north has mostly game reserves and parks. States like Niger, Bauchi, Borno, Kano and Jigawa have beautiful resorts. The north is so rich in land mass and that gives them a chance to really show their tourism potential. Currently in the country income from tourism has quadrupled. And it is estimated that in 2015 it will be representing close to thirty percent of the country’s income.
