Taxi Driver Jobs in New York

Taxi driver jobs in New York City have been around for about eighty years using the famous yellow cab. If you are interested in taxi employment and earn money with one of the taxi driver jobs, there are several issues that need to be considered.

There are few icons in the world that are as recognizable as New York City’s yellow cab. There are few professions that are a more reliable source of entry-level income than those lucky enough to own one of New York City’s yellow cab licenses.

As the United States and the rest of the world settle into the deepest economic recession of our lifetimes, as real estate prices decline, as the stock market makes new weekly lows and jobs and paychecks, what should we do?

We conserve, innovate, suffer or give up and leave. However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel and that is to have one of the yellow cab driver jobs in New York City.

Not everyone can do it. However, almost everyone can qualify and try taxi employment. A person who has one of the full-time taxi jobs, even in these tough times, is probably making a thousand dollars a week. Does this mean that all taxi driver jobs provide so much income? The answer is probably no. What it means is that there is a viable way to earn the national median income or more and there is room for many thousands to work each year in this industry.

Another consideration is to remember that it’s not really a job. It is a business and you have to commit. You will need to invest between four hundred and a thousand dollars to receive your license and be able to have one of the taxi driver jobs in New York City. What results is a situation where you will be your own boss.

Why such a large extension? All yellow cab drivers must pass the New York City exam and most applicants are NOT experts in the city’s geography. The city is made up of five districts, dozens of bridges and roads, hundreds of relevant landmarks, schools, hotels, theaters, hospitals, museums, parks, and much more.

To be fully prepared for the taxi driver job exam is to be prepared to drive a yellow cab in the city. Many people approach this business as if it were easy. However, this is generally not the case. For most, especially for those of us who have been out of school for a decade or two or three, and for those of us from the local suburbs or from other parts of the country and the world, extensive preparation in geography and navigation it is not only wise but inevitable.

The good news is that no matter how many people apply for taxi jobs and pass the exam to get the necessary license, there is tremendous labor turnover in the industry. This means that there is an endless demand for entry-level, newly licensed yellow cab drivers.

Long considered immigrant work, as the economy weakens and first-generation Americans enter the workforce, the immigrant or naturalized demographic declines and the number of US-born drivers increases.

Therefore, many of those who come desperate to the yellow cab industry are surprised to learn that working as an independent taxi driver is really a wonderful thing. Greater freedom or the opportunity to invest in a taxi or the coveted taxi medallion can pay off.

And in addition to steady income, there will be stories you have to tell. So if you are interested in having one of the taxi driver jobs in NYC, research the necessary requirements to obtain this valuable license so that you can start working soon.
