The double towel rail offers a simple solution to a moisture problem

It seems that wherever we move, wherever we visit, there is rarely enough storage space for all of our belongings. This seems most pronounced in the places that work hard for us: kitchens, garages, but especially those workhorse rooms, the bathrooms. While it makes sense to add a third bay for more storage space in a garage or build a kitchen spacious enough to store all the appliances and seating for an entire minor league team, the bathroom often takes a hit. A linen closet, great. Cabinets under the sink instead of a pedestal, another great storage solution. But really, when it comes to the bathroom, you need to get creative with storage.

A friend and I were visiting an old neighbor’s new house and would share a bathroom during our visit. When we toured the house, he loved what he did in the guest bathroom of his. It wasn’t huge, but I could tell he took his time when he selected the bathroom fixtures. As she was finishing my shower, I was delighted to see what Sally did to make the most of the space there: she invested in a double towel rack. Linda and I didn’t have to fight for space to hang our wet towel. What a good idea!

When I got home I checked a few websites specializing in bathroom supplies. I wanted to copy his cool idea and improve the limited hanging space I had in my master bathroom.

What were my options? Like traditional towel racks, I was able to find a double towel rack in all of the standard sizes: 18-inch, 24-inch, 30-inch, and 36-inch. I wanted one with a transitional style, with traditional lines but with a contemporary finish. I found them with the newer finishes like brushed nickel and oil rubbed bronze. But if you wanted clean-coated stainless steel, you might as well find one of those. I saw traditional polished brass and antique reproductions. I was able to find a double towel rack to outfit any bathroom to my desired taste.

My shopping curiosity was piqued and I kept shopping online. I remember remembering a house with a short wall outside the tub, definitely not enough room for even the shortest towel rack. I found a double towel rack hanging on the wall. It would have been a perfect solution to accommodate both my and my husband’s wet towels.

I also found another option – a hotel towel rack with a double bar below. What a great storage idea: Store folded bath towels and wash cloths on top, and hang gently used towels on the double towel bar below.

If you have a linen closet to store towels and you still like this idea, you can get the hotel towel rack with a double bar below, but instead of a coat rack, you can choose one with a tempered glass shelf. Install one of these near your bathroom sink, and you’ll be able to place your cosmetics, a scented candle, and a lucky bamboo pot, and you’ll have a convenient place to hang a couple of hand towels. These also come in contemporary designs and vintage reproduction styles.

I started thinking: why not take this idea outside of the bathroom? I found a double kitchen towel rack that hangs inside the sink cabinet door. This gives plenty of space to dry your dish towels after a big cleanup in the kitchen. How about a simple wooden double towel rack in the bathroom near the pool? There never seems to be enough space to hang pool towels.

A simple idea that solves a simple problem…
