The importance of detoxification for weight loss

Why an overload of toxins in your body will prevent you from losing pounds

Just like changing your motor oil to make your car run better, nothing could be more important to your health than cleaning it of toxins. Our body works non-stop to keep our sensitive organs (brain, eyes, pancreas, thyroid) safe from the harmful effects of toxins. But our modern world is also a toxic world, filled with pollution, pesticides, plastic compounds, and food additives; all contributing to an epidemic of disease and obesity.

It’s no wonder detox and fitness retreats are becoming increasingly popular as a healthy getaway.

A body that clings to toxins clings to fat

Detoxification is any process that removes harmful substances from your body. These substances can be biological, such as bacteria, viruses, mold, yeast, and parasites…or harmful industrial chemicals, such as heavy metals, compounds from agriculture, food processing, cosmetics, cleaners, and paints. In the past, most of our toxins were biological. Nowadays, we mainly need to eliminate chemical compounds and heavy metals for our health. Processed foods alone contain over 3,000 unnatural chemicals!

These substances or toxins are continuously removed from our body through breathing, sweat, urine, and feces. Our main detoxification organs are the lungs, intestines, liver, kidneys, lymphatic system, and skin.

BUT, if we can’t detoxify fast enough, our fat cells will enlarge so the body can store excess toxins and keep them away from sensitive tissue. When the toxins are more concentrated, our fat cells will also increase in size to keep them diluted.

Here are some tips to help your body in the detoxification process:

  • Detox Cleanse Kits: With the guidance of a health or nutrition professional, consider a quick, liver, parasite, colon, or yeast cleanse.
  • Diet – Go Organic! Eat produce without pesticides and fewer processed foods. Including “super” greens like Chlorella and Cilantro in your diet helps the natural chelation process, or chemical binding, for elimination to occur.
  • Water – Drink at least 64 oz. of water daily to support the removal of water soluble toxins from your kidney. Your urine should be “almost clear” throughout the day. Mercury Dental Fillings: Mercury fillings in the mouth can wreak havoc on your health; replace them with mercury-free amalgams.
  • Fiber – Eat foods high in fiber to help your intestines remove toxins from the body. Aim for 2 to 3 bowel movements per day. Constipation leads to the reabsorption of toxins.
  • Sweat – Use vigorous exercise, saunas, and steams to help release stored toxins. Try to have a deeper sweat to clean once a week. Drink extra water to support flushing.
  • Massage: Bodywork and yoga support the drainage of toxins through the lymphatic system (which cleanses the body of cellular waste). Try to incorporate one or both weekly.

Supporting your body’s detoxification functions will not only protect your sensitive organs and tissues and prevent the enlargement of fat cells and the storage of fatty acids locked up in chemicals, it will also make you FEEL clean and light.
