Stay away from cheap felt though, as it can’t take the abuse of more than a few sets. Choose it only if you are buying a table for the children.

Rails

The rails of a pool table need to be strong and heavy because they need to support your weight and influence the bounce of the ball. Solid wood is the perfect choice and also boasts a unique beauty with its fine grain patterns. However, it can be expensive, so consider it only if the table is to be used for daily or professional games.

Pressed lumber or engineered lumber is another option. It is not as heavy or dense as solid wood, but it will do for casual games. Note that it tends to warp and weaken if the table cloth is repeatedly replaced. This is so even if the table bed is made of slate and the worsted woolen cloth.
